Position Title: Rescue Lieutenant

Job Description:

This is responsible technical and supervisory work in the Alachua County Fire Rescue Department providing medical care to the critically ill or injured and performing firefighting duties as required by the situation.

Responsibilities:

  • Ventilates burning buildings; performs forcible entry as necessary.
  • Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with core values including: integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability and communication.
  • Recognizes and secures evidence of arson for analysis; secures building before leaving the scene.
  • Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.
  • Reports necessary information to emergency room upon arrival with patient and fully documents information on run report as required.
  • Provides control of hemorrhaging and limb and spinal immobilization; bandages wounds and treats other medical emergencies.
  • Responds to medical, fire and other emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Provides emergency medical assistance including, but not limited to: airway control and maintenance, positive pressure ventilation, cardiac resuscitation, cardiac monitoring, intravenous therapy and pharmacological therapy.
  • Operates hose line and other emergency equipment used in extinguishing fires.
  • Assists in cleaning, restocking, and maintaining vehicle and equipment after each call.
  • Attends and participates in company drills and training sessions.
  • Determines extent of illness or injury, establishes priority for required care and performs triage.
  • Inspects equipment and supplies daily to ensure that vehicle is in compliance with all state and local laws and requirements.
  • Exudes a positive customer service focus.
  • Performs routine maintenance of quarters, station and grounds.
  • Utilizes all required safety measures when performing assigned job duties.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports as directed and in accordance with State, local, and department’s guidelines.
  • Initiates command procedures in compliance with the department’s Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Transmits patient information to the receiving facility via telephone or radio.
  • Performs duties of field training officer with probationary employees and acts as a preceptor for EMT and Paramedic students.Supervises the delivery of critical patient care upon arrival at the scene to ensure proper care is administered.
    Assists in inspections and pre-fire tactical surveys of area buildings.
    Assists in moving patients to emergency medical vehicles to transport to a medical facility.
    Counsels employees as required, supervises and evaluates assigned driver.

Requirements:

  • Ability to perform prolonged and difficult work under adverse conditions.
  • Thorough knowledge of current emergency medical treatment procedures and departmental medical care protocols.
  • Thorough knowledge of emergency medical and fire equipment, operation and maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and representatives from other agencies.
  • Ability to learn and operate relatively complex fire fighting equipment.
  • Ability to recognize life-threatening situations and react accordingly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Considerable knowledge of fire prevention, suppression, and extinguishment techniques.
  • Ability to follow precise technical instructions from a physician via phone or radio.
