Position Title: Equipment Mechanic Supervisor

Job Description:

The ideal candidate will be an expert in their field, with experience in repairing and maintaining various vehicles and supervising a repair shop.  This person will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, takes initiative, possesses effective problem-solving skills, maintains safety standards, and has a strong work ethic.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, coordinates, inspects, supervises and participates in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, CNG, and zero emission powered propulsion systems in light and heavy equipment and vehicles; coordinates equipment maintenance and repair activity with other divisions and City departments.
  • Evaluates service needs, equipment, and work methods; reviews and prioritizes service order requests; schedules work; assists in developing comprehensive plans to satisfy future needs for services; establishes and enforces operating and safety procedures; investigates service requests and complaints; determines equipment, materials and staff time necessary to complete vehicle/equipment maintenance and diagnose service needs; and as necessary, explains priorities, programs, and policies.
  • Prepares and maintains records of time, material and equipment used; requisitions supplies and materials; evaluates and may institute changes in work methods and priorities; assigns and determines workload and verifies vehicle/equipment repair analysis or diagnosis; inspects work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with City regulations and standards; directs routine supervision of staff work sites for compliance with safety requirements.
  • Performs follow-up on citizen requests for services; coordinates activities with other City staff in resolving problems; maintains vehicle and equipment records and writes a variety of reports and correspondence.
  • Work in concert with departments and vendors to assist in developing, and improving current and future equipment outfitting specifications.
  • Plans, assigns, supervises and directs the work of employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Makes crew/shop assignments and schedules work; trains and performance evaluation for employees; takes necessary disciplinary actions; assists in the selection of staff.
  • Responds to after-hours problems related to equipment breakdowns, evaluates needs and makes required decisions to remedy the situation.
  • Plans and implements employee training; evaluates employee performance; initiates disciplinary action; ensures observance of safety rules.
  • Prepares a variety of reports.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this classification.

  • Four years of recent journey level experience as a mechanic; OR
  • Three years as a journey level mechanic AND two years as a service writer for an automotive repair shop including experience in a lead supervisory capacity.
  • Applicants with three or more years of experience supervising and directing the work of heavy duty mechanics will be deemed most qualified.
