Job Description

The South East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. It includes routes such as the Edinburgh City Bypass, as well as a large section of the M8 connecting Edinburgh to Glasgow.

The South East Unit also includes 870 bridges and structures including the iconic Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, as well as other major bridges such as the Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge. Trunk roads in the South East serve as a vital link for Scotland’s economy, ensuring thousands of daily journeys and deliveries are carried out safely.

In this role, you will support the SE Environmental Manager in the delivery of environmental and ecological work for all proposed schemes on the SE NMC. Furthermore, you will contribute to the monitoring of BEAR Scotland’s compliance with relevant contractual and legislative environmental obligations and requirement

Responsibilities:

  • Promote environmental best practice at all stages of engineering and construction projects.
  • Engage and collaborate with environmental stakeholders and regulators.
  • Liaise with contractors and specialist consultants to ensure timely completion of environmental deliverables.
  • Write reports which communicate complex environmental issues in a clear and concise manner.
  • Input / review of applications for protected species derogation licences, Controlled Activities Regulations (CAR) licences, marine licences, etc.
  • Have a thorough understanding and practical knowledge of Habitats Regulations Appraisals (HRA).

Requirements:

  • A strong understanding of the environmental impacts associated with infrastructure developments and experience in statutory / non-statutory environmental impact assessment.
  • Experience in reviewing and approving technical environmental documents and reports.
  • A good knowledge of Scotland’s ecology and practical experience in undertaking ecological field work.
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal), strong team-working capabilities, and the ability to work independently and take responsibility for delegated schemes.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage a challenging workload which is subject to change at short notice.
