Job Description:

This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position with the Carson City District Attorney’s Office, located in Carson City, Nevada. Under immediate supervision from the District Attorney, Assistant District Attorney or the Chief Deputy District Attorney, the Deputy District Attorney performs a variety of professional legal work in the District Attorney’s Office, including criminal, juvenile and civil matters; develops, prepares and presents cases requiring court and/or administrative tribunal appearances; represents the State or City in criminal or enforcement proceedings; represents the State in juvenile delinquency proceedings and the interest of the public in NRS 432B proceedings; serves as legal counsel to the City and its departments,  boards and commissions; and performs related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  • May drive a personal or City vehicle in the course of the work to off-site locations in order to attend meetings and conduct other legal business.
  • Prepares and presents criminal cases from inception through disposition in the trial court.
  • Acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with clients, public, and staff.
  • Performs research, interprets cases, statutes and ordinances, drafts pleadings, interviews witnesses, presents arguments and evidence in court and negotiates plea resolutions.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the division’s services by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.

Requirements:

  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Techniques for dealing with individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.
  • Judicial procedure and rules of evidence; applicable laws, codes and regulations.
  • Computer applications particularly as related to the performance of legal research.
