Position Title: Bachman Indoor Pool Lifeguard

Job Description:

Maintains a safe recreational swimming facility by preventing drowning and other injuries to patrons. As assigned, may lead the work of other lifeguards, provide swimming lessons and teach basic water safety at municipal swimming pools, or serve as the pool’s cashier.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans swimming lessons, and instructs and evaluates participants enrolled in the Learn to Swim program at municipal swimming pools to provide swimming and water safety training.
  • Responds to emergency situations to ensure the safety of pool patrons and performs appropriate emergency and rescue techniques when necessary including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid in an effective manner to ensure proper crisis management.
  • Assists with special events, swim meets, and other events including supervising special events to ensure such activities proceed in a safe manner.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports to ensure effective program evaluation.
  • Inspects pool equipment such as ladders, diving boards, and guard stands to maintain a safe facility.
  • Communicates with the general public regarding lessons and answers questions that might arise about services provided, swimming, and water safety.
  • Observes swimmers from guard stand or pool side and cautions swimmers of rule violations to enforce pool safety rules.
  • Provides scheduling of the lifeguard staff to ensure proper lifeguard coverage during pool operations.
  • Maintains records, documents water quality and chemical balance, reports injuries, accidents and assistance rendered to patrons to maintain proper files.
  • Cleans pool, pool area and restrooms and inspects pool equipment such as ladders, diving boards and guard stands to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Provides training to lifeguards to ensure proper response by lifeguards to emergency situations.
  • Serves as an assistant to the pool manager and functions as the manager in the pool manager’s absence to ensure safe operations.

Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of lifesaving and first aid techniques.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and response.
  • Knowledge of pool chemical treatment requirements.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid Certifications required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to swim.
  • Ability to teach swimming lessons and safety procedures to others as required under the Learn to Swim program.
  • Ability to keep records pertaining to teaching of swimming lessons and enforce water safety rules.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.
